Egg collection, also known as egg retrieval is the most crucial step in the In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). The woman put on injected medicines in order to stimulate ovaries to produce one or multiple follicles and eggs.

Once the woman put on simulation injections, continuous monitoring of follicle development would be carried out using ultrasounds for every 4-5 days and hormonal tests as well. When the ultrasound shows the follicle size in the range of 15 to 20 mm diameter, follicles are considered mature enough to release eggs.

Timing is the key to the success of the overall IVF cycle, as taking out the egg at the premature stage or after maturation both can impact the fertilisation as well as the quality of eggs and embryo development. Hence doctor will look for the most opportune moment to retrieve the eggs from ovaries when it’s about to come out of the follicle.

Before the day of egg collection procedure, you will be handed over a set of instructions, which needs to be followed on the collection day. As egg collection is a minor surgery, so either you will be given a local or general anesthesia so that you won’t feel any pain during the whole procedure. The doctor with the help of ultrasound imagining will locate the follicles and collect the eggs through a hollow needle.

You can resume your daily chores normally without any hassle after the process.
